About Our Hospital

Carolinas Specialty Hospital (CSH) is a 40-bed long term acute care (LTAC) hospital with specialized programs in pulmonary disease, wound care management, and care for medically complex patients.  It operates within 305-bed Mercy Hospital located in the heart of Charlotte's beautiful and historic Elizabeth district. CSH opened in January 2003, and is the first and only LTAC "hospital-within-a-hospital" in the region.

CSH is a not-for-profit LTAC managed by Acuity Healthcare.  Acuity is a privately-owned Long Term Acute Care hospital company, founded in 2001.  The Acuity management team brings over 60 years of combined LTAC experience to Carolinas Specialty Hospital.  The Carolinas Specialty Hospital has distinguished itself through delivery of specialized LTAC hospital services, meeting needs of patients throughout the Carolinas.

What is an LTAC?

An LTAC is a Long Term Acute Care hospital designed for patients that are acutely ill and require a physician's care each day, just as in a "traditional" hospital, but are medically complex and not going to be ready for discharge in a short period of time.

Most LTAC patients are transferred from a traditional hospital once they are medically stable, but they can also be admitted from a skilled nursing facility, home, or a physician's office.  Just as with any hospital admission, the patient must meet criteria and have admission orders from their physician.

A typical LTAC patient may require care for:

  • Ventilator Weaning
  • Complex Wounds
  • Infections requiring IV antibiotics
  • Complications from extensive surgery
  • Multi-system failures
  • TPN
  • Neurological / traumatic injuries
  • Not yet able to participate in acute rehabilitation due to medical complexity
  • Bariatric Care

Our goal for each of our patients is to return them to their highest level of function and wellness.
