About Carolinas Specialty Hospital

Carolinas Specialty Hospital (CSH) is a long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital—the only one serving Charlotte. We are specifically licensed and administered to provide care for patients who require daily physician and staff attention for complex conditions.

What is a specialty hospital?

Most people have never heard of a “specialty hospital” until they or a family member need one. Unlike a traditional hospital, CSH cares for patients who will not be discharged in a short period of time.

Most CSH patients are transferred from a traditional, short-term care hospital or from a skilled nursing facility. Patients must meet admission requirements and be referred by their physician. A typical CSH patient may require various types of acute care in order to return to his or her highest level of wellness.

Patients at CSH don’t just have a doctor, they have a full array of specialists to evaluate, diagnose and treat them. Unlike traditional hospitals or skilled nursing facilities, CSH employs a true inter-disciplinary approach to all patients. This is an essential part of what makes us successful in addressing patients’ complex medical issues. This multi-faceted approach extends to every aspect of the patient’s health.

We treat patients differently

Patients and their loved ones typically first come to us worried and anxious from dealing with a long-term, serious medical problem. So our physicians and staff members meet with each new patient and his or her family members to explain what to expect, to help relieve their anxiety and to formulate a plan of care.

Objectives and treatment options are thoroughly discussed with the patient and family members, who are a central part of the decision making process. Each patient receives highly individualized care in a non-hurried, comfortable atmosphere.

Our patients often require specialized programs in pulmonary disease, wound care and management of multiple medical conditions. CSH patients may require one or more of these services:

  • Ventilator weaning
  • Complex wound treatment
  • Treatment for infections
  • Care after complex surgery
  • Intravenous feeding
  • Different treatments for multi-system failures
  • Care for neurological and traumatic injuries
  • Bariatric care

CSH strives to maintain an atmosphere that fosters dignity for patients, a culture of discussion and development of best practices, and an employee environment that nurtures achievement, growth and personal satisfaction. CSH tracks various quality measures in the areas of patient safety, patient satisfaction, infection control, medication administration and wound improvement.

Carolinas Specialty Hospital is a not-for-profit LTAC hospital managed by Acuity Healthcare, a privately owned LTAC hospital company. Currently, CSH has 40 beds on a floor of Mercy Hospital located in Charlotte’s historic Elizabeth district. In August, Carolinas Specialty Hospital will move to its state-of-the-art facility in south Charlotte.
