Working at CSH
Imagine working in a hospital where everything you needed was right at your fingertips. Respiratory therapists that don’t ever float to other units; physical therapists that never leave your floor and a complete Central Supply a few steps from the Nurses’ Station. Think about all of the ancillary support offered in a typical hospital such as an infection control nurse, a wound care nurse, and a director of quality; now think about all of that support right on your unit. When you have all of these hospital services only being shared by a forty-bed facility, you have more time to do what you’re trained to do, take care of patients. Employees don’t get lost in the shuffle at Carolinas Specialty Hospital (CSH), they get noticed.
The work is challenging and the day goes by quickly. There is no doubt that when a patient is admitted to CSH, they require a great deal of care and attention. Families are worried and tired and have many questions. Because we work as a multi-disciplinary team, the patient and family get a lot of special attention.
The patient might be seen by nursing, respiratory therapy, case management, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and a dietitian. A pharmacist is on the nursing unit every day, reconciling and reviewing patient’s medications. Typically, each patient will see three to five physicians per day, the hospitalist, pulmonologist, infectious disease specialist and cardiologist to name just a few of the credentialed specialties that visit our hospital each day.
The best thing about working at Carolinas Specialty Hospital is getting to be a part of a patient’s recovery. When you are part of a team that helps a ventilator-dependent patient breathe on their own again, participate in physical therapy and go home with their family, the hard work is worth it. When you hear a patient speak for the first time in months, the hard work is worth it. That’s how it feels to be a part of the Carolinas Specialty Hospital team.
